As Founder and President of Environmental Contracting, Aram Arakelian is responsible for the innovation and leadership that has made Environmental Contracting Corporation one of the leading general contractors in Southern California. Aram began his career in New York as a facilities engineer for the New York Telephone Company, then moving into a career in contracting which now spans over thirty years. In 1973, he relocated his family to Los Angeles and joined the Interiors Division of Turner Construction Company. Joining Kajima International in 1977, he accepted an executive position and successfully helped the firm grow to one of the top 400 Contractors in the United States. His last accomplishment, before starting Environmental was negotiating the joint venture and project team coordination for the Greater Los Angeles World Trade Center, Long Beach. Aram’s plan to launch his own contracting firm was realized in 1984 with the establishment of Environmental. Another dream was realized in 2002, when Environmental designed and built its own building at First and Vignes in Downtown Los Angeles. Apart from his obligations as President of Environmental, Aram has been a driving force in raising the levels of interior construction in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. The pre-construction budgeting process he created to assist designers, brokers and clients has become an industry standard. Environmental also provides educational seminars to the design and brokerage communities. Aram established the student scholarship fund for the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Southern California Chapter in 1991. It is now a self-sustaining fund for interior design students throughout the area. He was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the IIDA for his contribution to education in 1996, and the firm has been the recipient of seven Calibre Awards. In 1992 the Los Angeles Area Council Boy Scouts of America honored Aram with a Distinguished Good Scout Tribute in recognition of his dedicated service, patriotism and example to the youth of our country. In 1994, Pepperdine awarded Aram with a Doctorate in Philanthropy. PETER M. With certification from OSHA, Ara also oversees all health and safety issues for Environmental. Ara has taken the lead at Environmental by becoming the first LEED Accredited Professional, with more soon to follow. Over the years, he has implemented many standards at Environmental consistent with the principles of sustainability, including the sorting and recycling of demolished materials from construction sites. Since his accreditation, Ara has attended many seminars by such organizations as the Southern California Gas Company on such topics as “Energy Efficiency Meets Sustainability”, as well as USGBC product trade shows. Committed to sustainability in design and construction, Environmental began a series of workshops last Spring for architects and designers called Green Thursdays, which Ara co-produced.
